Daniel Jere finished in distant 49th position at the Rilton Chess Cup that ended on Monday in Sweden.
Jere lost to Swede Thingstad Even in the last round.
Jere started the tournament on a good note but lost steam when the going got tough.
He managed to pick four points from nine games.
The Zambian, who was ranked 34th at the tournament, beat Lars Vistsen of Denmark before drawing with Russian Grand Master (GM) Aleksandr Shimanov in round two.
Jere defeated top-ranked Israeli Grand Master Ilia Smirin but went down to Swedish GM Tiger Hillarp in the seventh round before drawing against Russian IM Vasilisji Gagarin in round eight on Sunday.
The tournament was won by GM Hammer Jon Ludvig of Norway, who accumulated seven points.
Ludvig was tied on seven points with GM Tiger Persson Hillarp of Sweden but the Norwegian won on head-to-head count.
Jere was the only African at the tournament that attracted 85 players from across the world.
